Frequently Asked Questions

How does Axoni's HYDRA software compare to MQ or FIX?
MQ and FIX are used primarily to send events and facilitate workflow dialogue. HYDRA, Axoni's data replication software, can also be used for this purpose (via Kafka) to enable key benefits such as message replay, data stream processing, scalability, and the overall Kafka ecosystem. Most financial market infrastructures that provide MQ or FIX capabilities also need to send SFTP reports to provide additional bulk data and/or to provide snapshots of a trade/position to mitigate the risk of an event from MQ/FIX not being processed correctly. HYDRA offers a more complete solution to access all your data.

How does Axoni's HYDRA software compare to an API?
APIs are well-suited for targeted queries from another system and are not ideal for managing large amounts of data or for cases when it is preferable for the data to be 'pushed' to the user. Axoni's HYDRA software provides direct database access, which grants greater flexibility and better query performance, especially as the volume of data increases, while also providing guarantees of accuracy and completeness.

How does Axoni's HYDRA software compare to blockchain technology?
While Axoni's HYDRA software is not a blockchain, it shares relevant characteristics such as:
- Keeping multiple databases owned and operated by multiple operations in sync
- Cryptographic proofs ('blocks') that data which is replicated is accurate and complete
- Concept of "nodes" and their associated identities on a network
HYDRA deviates from traditional blockchains in the following ways:
- Does not use smart contracts (e.g. decentralized applications)
- Primary interface to/from the software is a relational database (e.g. SQL) and Kafka
- Developed with the concept that a trusted central party is needed

In what scenarios would HYDRA benefit a financial services firm that is accessing data from a market infrastructure provider (e.g. prime broker, clearing house, exchange, etc.)?
HYDRA is the only data replication technology that can transfer large volumes of data between institutions in real time. Consequently, Axoni's technology is best suited in scenarios where volumes are high, timeliness of the data matters, and/or there is downstream risk or P&L impact to inconsistent or delayed data that originates externally.
